Adiós al polémico sensor de cámara GN3 en los nuevos Samsung Galaxy S25 y S25+
The Samsung Galaxy S24 and its variants have not been released yet, and we were discussing them this morning after confirming their official specifications. However, we already have information about the S25 and S25+. It turns out that the camera in the current S23 models, as well as the S24, share a common feature: the ISOCELL GN3 sensor. Google, in its new Pixel 8 Pro, decided not to use this sensor and opted for a customized GNK with 1.2 μm, manufactured by Samsung itself, granting it a better overall camera. Consequently, the Samsung Galaxy S25 will no longer include the GN3 sensor. Why would Samsung abandon it?
Despite the close relationship between Google and Samsung, Google was not convinced by Samsung’s GN3 sensor. Even though it was offered at a lower cost, Google chose a sensor based on the previous GN2 but with a smaller pixel size. This, in turn, has granted it the best camera currently on the market, which speaks volumes about the GN3 sensor.
Samsung will not use the GN3 sensor in the Galaxy S25 and S25+ and will move to a different sensor company, Sony, which seems to have developed a more advanced sensor. The information comes from Revegnus, a highly reputed leaker in the Apple and Samsung community. The new Sony sensor is believed to be one inch, although more details about it are yet to be released. Considering Sony’s current IMX 989 is in the mid-to-high range, we can expect something even better for Samsung to make the switch.
Both Samsung and Sony have been competing for years to offer the best camera technology. So Samsung leaving its own sensors behind for Sony’s is a historic move within its high-end phone range, specifically the S25 and S25+ models. We are still waiting to find out which specific sensor will be chosen for the 2025 devices.
The Samsung Galaxy S25 and S25+ will say goodbye to the GN3 camera sensor, which has received significant criticism in the past.
