Elon Musk continually makes headlines, whether it’s for creating a new company or making controversial comments on social media. Despite being the world’s richest man, he doesn’t seem to care about making absurd decisions or confronting others online. Years ago, Musk promised a high-speed transportation system called Hyperloop One, but now the company is closing, and the project will disappear, becoming a mere memory.

Hyperloop might not be familiar to many since the company started in 2013 and 2014 when it was established and its objectives were announced. It wasn’t until years later when Elon Musk began building more hype, showcasing Hyperloop prototypes and how this system would revolutionize transportation worldwide. These trains were to travel through tunnels specifically designed to reach incredibly high speeds, with Musk confirming they could reach up to 1,200 km/h, drastically reducing travel times between Europe and China.

Hyperloop One closes 10 years after the project’s inception, failing to create a single transportation system.

From 2017 to 2022, the company was known as Virgin Hyperloop One, following an investment from Virgin Group. During this time, Bobadilla, Malaga, was chosen as the development center for Hyperloop. Back then, it was indicated that the center would be ready by 2020, and from there, the high-speed trains and tunnels could be built.

Despite high expectations and passenger testing a few years ago, Hyperloop One has now closed its doors. The company announces its closure, laying off its entire workforce and selling off assets. According to Bloomberg, the company had been struggling financially, never securing a contract to create the first Hyperloop.

Zeleros, the “Spanish Hyperloop,” laid off half its staff and will focus on other projects.

Hyperloop One was promising, as Elon Musk’s vision was to replace current transportation systems, surpassing the average plane’s speed of 800 km/h and reaching close to the speed of sound at 1,234 km/h.

Ultimately, Hyperloop lasted 10 years, never even launching a transportation system to the public. Regrettably, we will never know the fate of this technology, at least from Musk, who is now more focused on AI. Meanwhile, potential rivals like Zeleros, considered the “Spanish Hyperloop,” may be left to continue the high-speed transportation project. Although the Valencia-based company recently announced layoffs for nearly half its workforce, Hyperloop One plans to lay off all employees by the end of the year.
